The rock in the pit of Maggieâs stomach let her know it was interrogation time. Oh, she was sure the women wouldnât rake her over the coals. Didnât seem to be their style. But theyâd get answers to whatever questions they deemed important. Might as well get comfortable.
âHere you go.â Nicaâs hand came from behind, handing her a can of Dr Pepper. âI hope this is okay. If you want something else, I can grab it.â
âThis is perfect,â Maggie took the offered can and popped the tab. âThanks.â
âNo problem.â Coming from behind her, Nica dropped to the ground at Maggieâs feet, and opened her own soda. âYou ready for this? Iâve got the bright lights and rubber hoses ready, but something tells me we wonât need âem, am I right?â Her grin was infectious and Maggie found herself smiling.
âKeep them handy just in case, but Iâll try and answer your questions.â
âNica, I told you we arenât going to give Maggie the third degree. This is a friendly lunch. I expect you to behave.â
âMomma, Maggieâs a Southern girl. She knows what it means when youâre invited to a family dinner. Right?â Nica looked imploringly at Maggie, as if pleading with her to not get her in trouble.
âItâs fine, Mrs. Boudreauâ¦I mean, Ms. Patti. I donât have any secrets.â The second the words left her lips, she wanted to yank them back, because she did have secrets. Secrets that could get these ladies in trouble if they discovered them. Sheâd have to watch every word from here on out, because there was something about Ms. Patti and Nica that made her feel relaxed and comfortable. Maybe a bit too comfortable because oddly, she found herself wantingâneedingâtheir approval. Which was ridiculous. There wasnât any reason their opinion about her mattered one way or another.
âMaggie, let me at least introduce you to the others. This is Tessa Maxwell, sheâs engaged to my son, Rafe. Then, next to her is her sister, Beth Stewart, whoâs engaged to my son, Brody. The young lady sitting across from you is Jillian Monroe.â
âWhich son is she engaged to?â Maggie asked and watched a splash of color sweep across Jillianâs cheeks.
âNone of them,â Jillian responded.
Maggie heard Ms. Pattiâs murmured, ânot yetâ, followed by Nicaâs snicker, and knew there was a story there.
Ms. Patti pointed at Nica. âAnd youâve met our youngest.â
Nica raised her soda in salute before taking a drink.
âWe are waiting for a couple more arrivals before we eat. Antonio and Serena are driving in from Austin. They spent a couple of days there, but theyâre coming home. Should be here soon. Liamâs at a job site, dealing with some issue that came up, but heâs going to try and make it.â She looked over her shoulder toward the grill. âThe menfolk are with my husband, Douglas. Thereâs Rafe, Brody, Chance, and, of course, Ridge.
âWhereâs Heath?â Beth looked up from studying her daughterâs picture to ask Ms. Patti. âI thought heâd be here for sure.â
âHe left early this morning.
